There are many ways to discover Eryri (Snowdonia), but few offer the same sense of freedom as exploring it by bike.

With its rugged mountains, ancient woodland, winding rivers and tranquil lakes, Southern Eryri is a landscape made for adventure. Staying at Penmaenuchaf places you within easy reach of some of Eryri National Park’s most spectacular scenery, where days spent exploring are perfectly balanced by returning to the comfort, warmth and hospitality of the house.

One of our favourite experiences to recommend to adventurous guests is a guided e-bike ride through Coed y Brenin, just a short drive from the hotel. One of the UK’s first purpose-built mountain bike trail centres, Coed y Brenin has welcomed riders for more than 30 years, offering an extensive network of trails through beautiful forests, alongside rivers and beneath the dramatic peaks of Southern Eryri.

During your stay at Penmaenuchaf, our reservations team can arrange a guided e-bike experience at Coed y Brenin. Whether you’re new to mountain biking or already enjoy exploring on two wheels, it’s a wonderful way to discover Southern Eryri with the reassurance of a local guide.

Guided by local experts

Your adventure begins when you meet your experienced mountain bike guide at Coed y Brenin, where you’ll be introduced to your bike and prepare for the trails ahead. After a brief introduction and bike set-up, you’ll set off to explore the forest trails on a route chosen to suit your ability and interests.

We’ve chosen to work with experienced local guides because they know these trails intimately. Their knowledge of the landscape, terrain and conditions means you’ll not only ride with confidence but also discover hidden corners of the forest and viewpoints that many visitors would otherwise miss.

Rather than worrying about maps, navigation or route planning, you’ll simply be free to enjoy the ride and immerse yourself in the beauty of Southern Eryri.

Your e-bike

Designed to make climbs more accessible while maintaining confidence on descents, your e-bike provides smooth, powerful assistance.

Whether you’re winding through peaceful forest tracks or climbing towards sweeping mountain views, the extra assistance lets you spend less time thinking about the terrain and more time appreciating the beauty of Southern Eryri.

What to wear mountain biking in Eryri

You don’t need specialist cycling clothing to enjoy your ride, but wearing the right layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the day. We recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable leggings or lightweight outdoor trousers
  • A long-sleeved base layer or lightweight fleece
  • Flat-soled trainers or sturdy footwear
  • Full-finger cycling gloves (available to purchase at Coed y Brenin)
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A packed lunch or snack if you’d like to stop along the way (available to arrange through Penmaenuchaf)
  • Lightweight knee protection if preferred

Helmets are mandatory and provided free of charge with all hire bikes, although guests are welcome to bring their own CE-approved cycling helmet.

Why we love this experience

At Penmaenuchaf, we believe the best way to experience Eryri is to immerse yourself in it.

A guided e-bike ride offers the freedom to travel further into the landscape while taking the time to appreciate its forests, rivers and ever-changing scenery. Every season brings something different, from fresh greens and wildflowers in spring to golden woodland in autumn, making each ride a unique way to experience this remarkable part of Wales.

It’s one of our favourite ways to introduce guests to Southern Eryri, combining adventure with the opportunity to slow down, look around and discover places that leave a lasting impression.
